      HILANDAR WINERY

The history of the winery of the Holy Monastery of Hilandar begins in 1198 AD when the first vines were planted on the slopes of Mount Athos by the then heir to the Serbian throne, Prince Rastko Nemanic, the founder of the Holy Monastery of Hilandar. The area where the first vineyard was planted is mentioned in the monastery's relics as PEDION, and it is still in the same location today. From those years until today the vineyards of the monastery are cultivated with absolute respect to the environment and the tradition of so many centuries. In the statutes of the monastery it is stated that every meal of the monks must be accompanied by a glass of wine, this tradition has helped in the development of viticulture and winemaking. 170 acres are cultivated with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties, the vineyard is close to the sea and cultivation is done with mild traditional techniques. The winery of the monastery is next to the vineyard.
